Another Aussie bird

Kookaburra

We had 3 kookaburras living near us. One of my favourite moments of the day was to wake to the sound of their raucous, infectious, cackling laugh from their home among the gum trees on the opposite side of the road.

It is an iconic Aussie sound, once heard never forgotten.

Give me a home among the gum trees

with lots of plum trees’

a sheep or two, and a kangaroo

a clothesline out the back

veranda out the front

and an old rocking chair.

This is a song about life in Australia. Written in 1975 when the pace of life was slower. Whenever I hear the call of the kookaburras it makes me think of this song. It was also the theme tune of “Burke’s Backyard” another iconic TV show about gardening and lifestyle living.
