This is one of those unexpected captured moments that cannot be repeated.
We were camping at Boulders National Park near Innesfail. This is a lovely FREE campsite run by the National Parks. Most NP camps have a fee of $6 or $7 per person. Here you have a limit of 3 nights and only a dozen camp sites, so it is a case of get there early to secure your spot. This area had been devastated by tropical cyclone Yasi a year ago and the food supply for the cassowaries had been stripped bare. Consequently the rangers had to supply the birds with food and they had become used to people. This big bloke wandered through the camp checking us all for hand-outs. He didn’t get any, as large signs warned us of feeding them, but he still looked around. Look at Jacks face, he was not very comfortable with such a close encounter.
