Photography 101 : Swarm 2

This is the most amazing swarm of budgerigars. We were camping in the Australian Outback and were woken by the noise of birds. Thousands of small green budgerigars turning and wheeling in tight formation. Dipping down briefly to snatch a beakful of water from a small puddle before swooping off again with a hawk darting in and out of the swarm. I stood entranced before grabbing the camera.

It is a once in a life time sight that I would like to share with you for this “photography 101” theme of swarm.

Just a small number of the thousands as they flashed by.

Then they would, briefly, dip down into this shallow puddle before wheeling off again.

What an amazing sight.

  1. magical! it makes me wonder how amazing our world would be if we were more respectful of all species and didn’t hunt them to extinction. of course we are also causing harm via the desecration to the environment… may we all hold these images in our hearts and remember to be kind to our planet! z

  2. Amazing, well captured! We have flocks of starlings that do that in the autumn months, never managed to video it though. A ‘proper’ swarm 🙂

    • It was very difficult to keep up with them I have about a dozen videos, most of them no good. I was pleased to capture this one.

  3. Stunning! Such a beautiful moment, 🙂

  4. Amazing!

  5. Lucky you, seeing this. Truly a great spectacle.

  6. So much more than ‘cage’ birds! Thanks for sharing.

  7. Fantastic! I have seen some budgie flocks when visiting Australia, and they are a glorious spectacle. Thanks for sharing it here. 🙂

    • G’day Jet, they are fascinating little birds and en-masse they are spectacular. Glorious is a good word to describe them

  8. the video was awesome to feel this swarm even more…. 🙂 and they are so green! and I just saw a snippet of a show where swarms of birds were endangering airplanes and as a solution – a guy was using a falcon to scare the birds off their path – and I guess it works. It is a natural way to keep the swarms of birds out of flight paths….

    • There was a hawk diving through the swarm, but it was so fast I couldn’t catch it on the video

      • well that would haste been cool – but the video you do give us is great -= it really makes us feel like we are there…. 🙂
