Thursday Doors : The outback pub in a Ghost Town

north of Kalgoolie pc 012_2448x3264

Along a red, dusty road in the outback of Western Australia this door leads into the tavern. It is all that remains of the town of Broad Arrow. A simple corrugated iron shack.

The town was gazetted in 1896, and at its peak during the gold rush, it had 15,000 residents, eight hotels, a soft drink factory, two breweries, a hospital and a stock exchange. By the mid 1920s the rush was over and the town was virtually abandoned.

The walls are covered in names and messages, some recent and some dating back to the early 1900’s.

Come inside…

It’s rather dim and gloomy but it still serves beers and a basic roast meal if you are hungry and it offers accommodation. But, thankfully, we had our own travelling accommodation with us.

Thursday Doors : Through the glass doors…

I visit the Murwillumbah Art Gallery quite often. The most recent visit I show cased Margaret Olley and her amazing art and the studio she worked in.

But the building is also a delight to walk around and as I passed these glass doors the beauty of the light and the shadows the late afternoon sun created I thought was also a work of art.

Stepping outside on to the deck the stunning scenery of the Tweed Valley unfolds before me and has me trying to capture the picture perfect art of nature.

Thursday Doors : Cat Nap…

In the village of Ebor, along the waterfall way in New South Wales, we stopped for a coffee.

With a name like “Fusspots” I could not resist stopping at this combined post office/grocery store/café.

It was a sleepy little village of 160 people and at least one very sleepy cat…

Some crafty, imaginative folks live here too. Notice what they have created from horse shoes…

Pushing the green door open the bell tinkled to let the owner know he had customers.

After a delicious, home-baked Devonshire tea we went on our way to explore this scenic area.

Thursday Doors : Armidale Cathedral…

My eye was caught by the colourful peeling bark of this gum tree in the grounds of the Armidale Catholic Cathedral. Then I noticed how the door matched the bark colour.

Thursday Doors : Armidale…

Last year when staying in Armidale we had a memorable bus tour around this remarkable city. A city I knew nothing about before taking this FREE bus tour.

(Come with me back to that tour, and find out more about this city, it is worth a look.)

But today I am showing you the door into Booloominbah. This magnificent country house is now at the centre of  The University of New England, Australia’s first regional university. It houses the offices of the University’s senior management, including the Vice-Chancellor’s office.

Armidale heritage bus tour pc 117_4000x3000

Booloominbah reflects the Gothic revivalist influences of the ‘Queen Anne‘ style that emerged in England and the United States in the last half of the 19th century. Recent refurbishment has restored much of the original decoration. The building has National Trust classification, as well as being listed on the Register of the National Estate. It has been described as being “perhaps Hunt’s greatest achievement in the field of domestic architecture.”[3] It also has a New South Wales heritage listing.  (Wikipedia)

This impressive home was built in 1888 for Frederick White and his family, who decided to establish his family of seven children in Armidale because the cooler, fresher, drier air of the Tablelands was good for their health. Amazingly this was only the summer home for the family and stood empty the rest of the year.

The only way to see inside this building was to go on the bus tour.

We only saw a very small part of the downstairs area, but it was very impressive.

Thursday Doors : Broome…

Broome is the tourist mecca town 2000 kilometers north of Perth in Western Australia. A magical place embraced by the azure blue of the Indian Ocean and surrounded with the deep red, pindan dirt. It is renowned for the pearling industry which brought many Chinese to these shores to dive for the elusive oysters that held the pearl in the heart of their shells.

These photos are the corrugated shops that form China Town today.

To see more photos of when I stayed in Broome go here.

Thursday Doors : Wine and roses.

When you go to the Margaret River area in Western Australia a visit to a winery is a must do. It is one of the top wine regions in Australia, so many to choose from, but when I saw this eye-catching sculpture that the locals call “the chick on the stick” and saw the name “Laurance Winery”, that is my son’s name, I turned in to check it out.

It was a beautiful rose garden leading to the cellar door. Just look at how impressive this door is.

I visited in 2010 during our trip around Australia. To see more of that visit click here.

Or follow this link to their website and a virtual video tour of the winery.

Thursday Doors : Mountain Hut…

Hydro Snowey mt hut pc 051_3264x2448

Travelling over the Snowy Mountains on our trip around Australia in 2010 we stopped at this mountain hut. It was late afternoon and we were looking for some where to stay the night. These huts are provided for travellers and mainly for trampers and skiers in the winter. We went over for a closer look at the door.

This looked promising so we went inside and saw this notice on the wall.

Murry 1 to hut 115

So we decided to stay the night. Jack collected some fire wood.

hut-2_2877x2172

After setting our bed up in Matilda we relaxed for a while.

hut-3_2931x2178

As the sun set and a chill crept into the air we went into the hut and closed the door.

hut-1-2_2769x2077

It was a very basic abode but when Jack lit the fire it soon warmed up.

hut-5_3264x2448

I cooked toast over the flames to go with the baked beans I am heating in the saucepan.

hut-1_2937x2203

Then it was time to relax with a glass of wine in front of the fire for a while.

hut-4_3264x2448

As the fire died down to embers and the moon rose we went out to our comfortable bed in Matilda. Making sure we shut the door behind us…

hut-6_3264x2448

In the year we travelled around Australia we stayed overnight in many different places, but this would be one of the highlights.

Thursday doors : Akaroa…

These doors were in the very attractive township of Akaroa in the South Island of New Zealand.

This is where I saw the “The Giants House” A house and garden full of wonder. The garden overflowing with flowers, vegetables, quirky sculptures and fantastic mosaic art. All created by one very energetic woman.

If you have time, take a cyber trip via this link to be amazed.
